Scoring Whitetail Hunting
Scoring whitetail hunting is not an exact science. Some may even think it's a crazy idea. Scoring antlers, horns, heads; that's not crazy? Our mind, our ego, scores everything; subconsciously at least! When a woman walks by, when we meet someone, or we see something for the first time. The score may change when we know more... In other sports we score how they play, or the quality of their play. It depends on how one looks at something. Trophy hunters in particular should be scored. Visit the links at the bottom of this page for more about how we do it. Read the other pages for a more complete view of our hunting/scoring philosophy. You could say that we are trying to "level the playing field" by establishing some hunting guidelines and scoring whitetail hunting.
Some in the hunting 'business' care about hunting and it's future. Others appear to only care about the money. Millions are being spent on advertising. Whitetail, and especially trophy whitetail, currently drive a big segment of the hunting business. Much of the advertising seems to promote the idea that good hunters always take huge trophy animals. The 'need' of a big trophy is selling: hunting trips, guided hunts, land, feed, seed, farm machinery... much of which has no part in authentic hunting. "Hunters" sometimes simply buy easy trophy hunting; going where trophy animals are raised, and are relatively easy to take.
Our goal at score-your-hunting is to promote authentic hunting. We encourage hunters to consider their hunting experience to be as important as the trophy they hunt for. Quality hunting and the hunting business is driven by "what we buy". We hope to discourage some of the poor quality hunting practices by putting more emphasis on the hunting. We are all trophy hunters in that we want a big mature deer. Some of us just don't believe it should be bought, or raised like a cow. Note the comparisons or hunting scores on these pages are realistic guidelines, but some of the skills are about equal. The ranking could change because of the details of a particular hunt. They are listed from the highest to the lowest skill, with some short explanations.
