Lohman Calls

by Buck
(Oklahoma)

I have used several different Lohman calls in years past.
I'll say I bought this Lohman Invisi-Buck call five years ago, but it could have been longer. I only used it for a couple of seasons, I'm sure of that. I don't claim to be an expert on using it.

This electronic call does everything it was advertised to do. It offers a remote control, and four calls: Snort Wheeze (I've never heard the real thing up close, but this didn't sound realistic to me?), Antler Rattle (Sounds ok, but only one rattle sequence, no variation?), Dominate Grunt (Strong, but ok?), Doe Bleat (Loud, but ok?). Maybe my expectations were too high?

I thought the remote control would be great and that I could place the call to maneuver or possibly distract a deer somewhat for a bow shot. That kinda-sorta worked once, but more often 'I' felt distracted (not ready for a shot) when using the remote.

I don't remember the advertised range for the remote, but mine seems to work every time to 25 or 30 yards. Enough range for most bow hunting.

As far as I know I never called in a distant deer with it. The deer I could see, sometimes seemed startled by the call. (You can't vary the volume.)

Before using the call I hadn't thought about putting the call in place. (Du!) Placing the call in a good location also spreads yout scent in or near where the deer are expected to come.

I quickly decided this device was "more trouble than it was worth." I always hate to admit I've spent money on something I won't use, so I tried it again a second season.

In my opinion Lohman did not pay attention to detail on the actual build of the call. To change the batteries you must remove four tiny phillips head screws in the call, and one in the remote. This is a slow, awkward, tedious job; especially if it were to become necessary in the field.

I may have a negative perspective because I have been moving away from using such tools for some time now. I sometimes carry a small mouth blown call, but seldom use it. For me, simpler is better, or at least more satisfying.

UPDATE: I now carry only my iPhone with numerous calls on it. I seldom call with it, but it can do so many things; I always carry it.
