Hunting Safety, Gun Safety

Hunting safety has improved somewhat in recent years. The use of hunting safety courses, hunter-orange, telescopic sights, the safety harness... have all helped.

More gun safety courses or hunter safety courses improve safety. Their good effect has been offset somewhat by the increased use of the climbing stand, and elevated deer stands of all kinds. Today's deer hunters are most often injured from a fall.

That bright orange has surely saved many human lives, but very few deer. Read about a deers Sense of Sight. Hunter-orange greatly helps to identify a hunter. An excited hunter can think a person slipping through the brush is a deer. Where there are great many hunters, in a relatively small area, this has been a more serious danger. Especially in areas where deer drives with dogs or humans are common.

The scope also helps us identify a target better. The scope has probably saved some people who were not wearing hunter-orange. With a scope the hunter is more likely to be able to see that patch moving through the bush is a human, a dog, a cat, a cow...

hunter safety course Still there are hunting accidents, just as in any other activity. It helps that a safety course is usually required before a hunting license is issued. Perhaps even better is a safety minded friend or relative in the field with a new hunter. Click here to go to a link with all the fish & game, or wildlife departments of each state.

Guns, arrows, and knives, are all a part of deer hunting, and all potentially dangerous.

The trend in whitetail hunting is to hunt from tree stands or elevated platforms . This multiplies the danger, and has lead to an increase in falling accidents.

A hunter's heart can be pumping with excitement, he may be
stiff and numb from the cold, the stand can be slick, wet, iced over... It is easy to see how accidents can happen. Wear a safety harness!
