The hunting ranch is like a cattle ranch when you think about it. The deer are just another form of livestock used to make some money. The deer hunting rancher knows his herd well, he almost lives with them. He may feed them like cattle, using
food plots
and
feeders.
He tries to manage his herd and produce quality animals for "hunters" to buy.
A cattle rancher takes his livestock to market and they are killed eventually. The deer rancher or deer hunting
guide
doesn't take his deer to market. He usually knows where his deer will be. He takes the "hunter" to the deer so that he will kill one and pay for it.
Sometimes we see one of these "hunters" on TV.
Somewhat like a
canned hunt
, on this scripted hunt, the client is chauffeured to a fairly comfortable hunting stand where he can sit and watch the deer. The deer are often on food plots or coming to feeders. He may have the time to talk with his rancher guide about the best animal to take. They sometimes choose which animal he kills
It's not hunting! We need another name for this; Ranch Harvesting? Hunting is where a hunter uses 'his' skills to find and outwit an animal. Some ranches build an environment to grow great animals and manipulate them with deer food... Most hunting has been eliminated to ensure a successful client who will pay big bucks for his big buck.
Now some will say, "It's not like that." No, it may not be, and it doesn't have to be, but it sure looks like that! People who don't hunt, animal rights activist, and others see it that way. Some of them say hunting is not sport, it's just killing.
The ranch "hunters" sometimes do very little hunting themselves. They may not need much hunting skill. They often take a fine trophy animal. They pay their money and then think they score the same bragging rights as a highly skilled authentic hunter.
That Ain't Right!
This is just one reason we need to "Score-Your-Hunting", not just your animal.
If real hunters want fair-chase, authentic hunting, these businesses will have to provide it; some already do.
