Scoring Hunting Methods

Some hunting methods definitely require more skill than others.
Yet, it is not easy to score-your-hunting. We need lots of information about where the hunt took place, what help was used, what tools were used, how much luck was a factor, and much much more. Scoring hunting requires all the information possible.

It is, however, possible to place hunting methods in a more general order of difficulty. Remembering the details of a particular hunt could change it's ranking.

1. Stalking a whitetail with their keen senses is extremely difficult. Mature deer are especially difficult. Stalking with a bow, or a short range firearm, and cleanly taking a mature deer, buck or doe, requires awesome hunting skills or luck.

almost as difficult as stalking.
The two hunting methods are often combined. A stalking hunter calculating the deer's path, and successfully waiting for the deer to intersect with him. Especially when
it's done at short range; another
awesome hunting feat.

3. Placing and building a ground blind in the right place, and from natural materials requires skill and knowledge. All blind and stand hunting requires the skill to put it in just the right place. They may require patiently sitting still for long periods of time. Picking the perfect moment, to draw, or to raise the gun, without alerting the animal, it requires timing, making the shot... it all takes some luck and skill.

4. The portable tree stand is a powerful tool in areas with good trees, but it requires knowledge and skill to use. The hunter may move into an area, scout, and then quietly climb to a vantage point which he has calculated from the sign. His scouting skills must be good if he is to succeed. Being elevated offers some advantage in concealing movement, but an unnatural shooting angle.

6. Elevated stands also require the same scouting for proper placement, but may allow for more movement than hunting on the ground.

7. The same thing is true for enclosed elevated stands, but they offer a level of comfort which can make hunting easier.

8. Adding a food plot to one of the methods of hunting can make it easier and sometimes lower your score. Authentic hunting diminishes with more unnatural manipulation.

9. Driving deer is a somewhat dangerous hunting method. The participants may be skilled, but it does not require that much
actual hunting skill. We probably won't score it.

10. Using a feeder takes the natural out of nature, the wild out of wildlife, and the hunt out of hunting. Generally feeding wildlife is a bad idea. Shooting a deer at a feeder requires little hunting skill. We won't score it!
