After the hunting harvest of your first deer you may be wondering; What do I do now?
First thing is to
field dress
the deer unless you can get it to a processor very quickly. I have always field dressed as soon as possible, but how quickly is necessary depends somewhat on the temperature. The warmer the weather the quicker it should be done.
Hunting was originally for the meat. For many hunters meat is still an important reason for hunting. Only in recent times has hunting become more for sport and less for food.
A part of authentic hunting is the proper care and use of the animals meat. This shows respect for our sport, and respect for the animal.
Many hunters around the world, and our own native people consider the animals spirit. Often giving thanks in gratitude for the life sustaining meat they receive from a successful harvest.
I believe we have dominion over animals, but with that comes intelligent, responsible behavior. I'm not suggesting that we have a ritual after harvesting a deer. I do believe in showing reasonable respect to the animal and taking care that the meat is not wasted.
Those who can't use the venison, don't like it, have too much... should consider donating it. Give it to someone, or to one of the many organizations which will process and distribute it to those in need.
In Oklahoma we can take it to any meat processor from a fairly long list in the state hunting guide. We pay a ten dollar charge, and everything else is taken care of. I've heard some complain about paying $10, but it's a charitable donation.
