Good Hunting Ethics

To have good hunting ethics; be careful of your ego. The ego is that internal voice we listen to. It is not you or me, it's only a part of us, but thrives on feeling superior. The ego loves to feel superior, and it doesn't care if it's real or not. It can be good or bad, but it can never be satisfied. We can never have enough money, power, or things. We can choose where we are going, but the ego will drive us there.
It's nothing new: Own the power! Buy a Ford V8! We are all influenced by the media, especially the constant advertising. We may not need a big powerful truck, but we are continually shown on TV that "real men" have them.
Advertising is great at selling our ego on: big, powerful, and automatic. When we think about it: Automatic means we don't need much skill, to think much, or do much. About 90% of our new cars have automatic transmissions. Buying an automatic transmission in the USA is an automatic-no-brain-er. The car company makes an automatic extra $1000. We get automatic, more passive driving! The automatic is great for busy people, talking on the cellphone, sending text, putting on make-up, eating, drinking... but not for skillful driving enjoyment. But! Everything has a trade-off! We usually give up something when we get something. Get your big trophy buck, we guarantee our hunters success!
Some buy, automatic, guaranteed, easy hunting. Easy hunting may soon become boring hunting! If you keep your hunting a game of skill it will challenge and reward you for a lifetime. Authentic hunting feeds the ego in a good way, over and over. When we use "only" the harvest, the hunting bag, or the trophy, to measure our success; we can buy it. We don't need to learn much skill; just use
deer feeders,
hunting ranches,
canned hunts,
to make it easier.
We are not against people making money from hunting.
Some hunting ranches do sell "good hunting". The more hunters expect it; the more ranches will sell fair chase, authentic hunting. Some people already think that hunting is an old, outdated sport. They want to label hunting as cruel, barbaric, killing. Honestly; the way some "hunt", it is. Other sports are having trouble with steroids, lying, cheating, drugs, and almost anything to get what the ego wants.
Ethical skillful hunting is not that difficult!
Ethics: with good conduct, a life worth living, or a life that is satisfying. Most hunters, even those with good hunting ethics, use their harvest, game bag, or the trophy to measure success. We want a big deer, a trophy, or a full game bag. What we really want is a sense of accomplishment. We can't buy an accomplishment, we must do it, or achieve it. We can add value to our life in that way. Those with good hunting ethics take pride in their skill. When we buy success, except for earning the money, most of the value is external, and it depreciates rapidly. We must change and progress, but we need to think carefully about the long term effects of changes. If we look mostly at the trophy, to measure a hunter, the ego will continue to drive us in that direction. If we score hunting skill, the ego will drive us to be even better ethical hunters. Otherwise, hunting can become little more than killing, and eventually hunting may only be another part of our history. Those opposed to hunting could win! Click on the book to shop!
