Ethical Hunting & Ego

hunting ethics

To have ethical hunting; consider the ego.

The ego is that internal voice we listen to. It is not you or me, it is only a part of you or me. It thrives on feeling superior in some way.

The ego loves to feel superior, and it doesn't care if it's real or not. It can be good or bad, but it can never be satisfied. We can never have enough money, power, or things. We can choose where we are going, but the ego will drive us there.

Own the power!
Buy a Ford V8!

We are all influenced by the media, especially constant advertising. We may not need a big powerful truck, but we are continually shown on TV that "real men" have them.

Companies in our country have been great at selling us on: big, powerful, and automatic.

When we think about it: Automatic means we don't need much skill, to think, or do much. About 90% of our new cars have automatic transmissions. The rest of the world not so much.

Buying an automatic transmission in the USA is an automatic-no-brain-er. The car company makes an automatic extra $1000. We get less involving, passive, boring, driving!

The automatic is good for busy people, talking on the cellphone, sending text, putting on make-up, eating, drinking... not for skillful driving enjoyment.

Everything has a trade-off!
We usually give up something when we get something.

Now we are buying, automatic, guaranteed, hunting success. Easy hunting; soon it'll be boring! Keep hunting a game of skill and it'll be challenging and rewarding for a lifetime. Authentic hunting feeds the ego in a good way, over and over.

Using "only" the harvest, the hunting bag, or the trophy, to measure our success; we can buy it. We don't need to learn much; just use deer feeders, hunting ranches, canned hunts, ...

We are not against people making money from hunting.
Some hunting ranches do sell: fair chase, authentic hunting. The more hunters expect it; the more ranches will sell fair chase, authentic hunting.

Some people already think that hunting is an old, outdated sport. Some want to label hunting as cruel, barbaric, killing. Honestly; the way some "hunt", it is.

Other sports are having trouble with steroids, lying, cheating, drugs, and almost anything to get what the ego wants.

Ethics: with good conduct, a life worth living, or a life that is satisfying.

Most hunters, even good ethical hunters, use their harvest, game bag, or the trophy to measure success. We all want a big deer, a trophy, or a full game bag.

What we really want is a sense of accomplishment.
We can't buy an accomplishment, we must do it, or achieve it. We can add value to our life in this way.

When we buy it, except for earning the money, the value is all external, and it depreciates rapidly. Authentic, ethical hunters are appalled at those who go where they grow big deer, and pay to shoot one coming to a feeder. Feed livestock, sure, but not wildlife. Authentic hunting is being "watered down".

We must change and progress, but we need to think carefully about the long term effects of changes. If we look "only" at a trophy, to measure a hunter, the ego will continue to drive us in that direction.

If we score how we hunt, the ego will drive us to be even better ethical hunters. Otherwise, hunting can become little more than killing, and eventually hunting may only be another part of our history. Those opposed to hunting may win!
