Deer Hunting Tips for sitting on the ground: Lower is better for concealment, higher is better for comfort. Buying a portable stool consider: height, comfort, weight, quiet, camouflage, and stability. A wider, broader base is better for soft ground. Small legs/feet will sink into the ground. I currently uses the ones pictured. Also read:Ground Blinds
Do everything reasonable to make your sitting comfortable. Even with a good seat after an hour or two you will have trouble sitting still. I now use the low seat most and have added a thick layer of foam to it. I also hang a light weight pad over my back which is really welcomed on a knotty tree trunk. Be aware of anything which could make noise.
Magnetic tape is very handy if you can find it. The last I found was at a farm & ranch store. It's plastic tape only about 1/16 inch thick which I could cut with scissors. The attraction was not very strong, but great for keeping any small metallic objects in place, not rattling around and getting lost in a tool/tackle box...
List Are Great! Especially at the beginning of the season. A pleasant way to make list is to day-dream (in detail) about previous hunts. Day-dreaming helps you remember what you used on previous trips, and you can make your hunting list, camping list... writing down the equipment you needed to do it. You can also use
my hunting list
as a starting point or to double check yours.
Remember to make different list for different: hunting seasons, places, camping... You may want to make what I call a Git-R-Done List. This one is for things you need to do: around the house, job, business... Things that could interfere with your hunting. Don't forget to try to keep Mom happy too!
Check Your Calendar: Are there conflicts you need to take care of? You'll enjoy hunting more without nagging chores or conflicts on your mind. Check Your Equipment: Make sure everything still works. Something forgotten, or which doesn't work can spoil your hunt.
Deer Hunting Tips When Hunting: relax, enjoy, but stay focused, alert, ready, and make every minute count. I've had unexpected opportunities when eating, sleeping, "marking my territory"... Make it a habit to keep your bow or gun in reach.
To move quietly and
still hunt
, don't look and walk at the same time. Give full attention to your walking for a couple of steps, then stop, and give your full attention to looking and listening.
When still hunting stay on your toes; literally. Normal steps of putting your weight down on your heal first makes quiet movement difficult. Put your toe down first and slowly lower your foot. If you wear softer boots/shoes you can sometimes feel twigs, limbs... and stop before you put your weight on them.
More Deer Hunting Tips for walking: Never stop hunting! Don't walk or stand out in the open, on hill tops... If you must; make it quick. Walk in the shade, try to stay somewhat hidden always. If you stop walking for any reason, you haven't stopped hunting, stay alert...
Several times I've had a deer suddenly appear, but the movement of getting an arrow spooked the deer. I don't walk with a knocked arrow, but if I stop, I knock an arrow, or I sometimes wish I had.
I don't know if it's a sixth sense, subconscious, or what, but: I sometimes get a feeling just before something happens. I have learned to trust that feeling, and I get ready!
You can often see much better in a forest by getting low and looking under most of the tree limbs.
This deer hunting tip is very simple. I feel stupid that it took me years to figure-it-out. When walking under low hanging limbs I seemed to always make noise, even get clothing hung on them! Turn your cap bill around backwards so you can see up :-o
Tie a very small feather with dental-floss to your bowstring, bow, gun barrel... so that it can easily blow in the slightest breeze. It can help you detect wind direction when there is very little wind.
Know before you go! Watch the TV weather, or check it with your computer. Wind direction is very important; it and other weather factors can help you plan your hunt before you get there. Have a plan for different wind directions, conditions... Read:
The Sense of Smell
Having an SUV camping tent which attaches to your vehicle is handy, especially if the weather is bad. You don't need to get out in the cold or the rain as much.
More Deer Hunting Tips: Slow Down! Start hunting before you make a move. How many deer have you busted before you really started hunting, or because you were in a rush to walk somewhere and get started. We all make fewer mistakes when we go slow and think about our moves.
Deer Hunting Tips: Less can be more! Sometimes we try to do too much in one short hunt. Do less, but do it thoroughly. Don't try to "cover too much ground" of do too much in a limited amount of time. Slow down, and you may enjoy it more, and have more success.
Deer Hunting Tips: That one reminded me...The more "stuff" you use: decoys, remote calls, even scents... The more you have to move around your hunting area to put them in place. They may help, but you are moving, making noise, disturbing "the natural". Even more important you are adding your scent to a larger area.
There is great advantage in hunting the same area for years. You learn to predict the deer movement somewhat. I hunt a transition area often. The prevailing winds force me to bow-hunt most often in the evenings. The deer are moving out of the woods/bedding areas, and into the transition area (semi-open area) about sun down. They tend to hang-out there, often in small groups, until it gets pretty dark. When dark they move on to the wheat fields... Later in the season, around the rut, deer come and go at different times. They often travel through this area at some time of the day, and if rifle hunting I can back off where the wind direction is less of a problem.
Deer Hunting Tips: Cheap Call: I transferred my old predator and crow call cassette tapes to my computer, and then to my iPod. I use a small battery powered speaker made for another small electronic call with it. It's not as good as the $500 calls, but I already had everything except the $25 speaker.
Update: I don't use the iPod anymore; I use my iPhone which has call applications for just about every critter you can call.
Deer Hunting Tips: Where there is a chance for quick unexpected short range shot, I keep my scope set to a lower magnification. The low power setting allows me to quickly find the target with the wider field of view. A long shot will often allow enough time to turn up the power as I get into a more stable shooting position.
