The Deer Hunting Guide

sportsmans guide

A new hunter will need a deer hunting guide or teacher. He'll need someone to show him where to hunt and tell him why. Traditionally a family member will fulfill this roll; most often it's dad.

There are times when a real professional guide is needed. Hunting dangerous game is one. Hunting in a remote or mountainous region is another. Some species such as bear, mountain sheep, or goats come to mind.

Few other than a professional hunter will have the opportunity to become skilled in hunting in these places. Almost any hunter becomes somewhat like a new hunter in these situations.

This is a video of a guided hunt
where a grizzly charges the hunter and guide.

Most deer hunters
shouldn't need a professional guide.

A professional gets paid. Deer are abundant in most of our country. Both public and private land often allow hunting. Still some hunters must pay just to have a place to hunt.

But there are also some "hunters" would rather pay than learn the skills for authentic hunting. Read: Ethical Hunting and Ego. Sometimes it's just a friend, or the landowner; not a real professional guide. See: The Hunting Ranch.

Getting information is important.

A landowner may become your guide. There may be things you need to know. The landowner may not want you in some areas. You don't want to wast time. The landowner can often tell when and where he has seen deer. This can help with your scouting, or to plan your hunting.

Asking questions seems a natural and smart thing to do. But, when the landowner has a stand or a food plot which he has made for hunting. If he can put you in exactly the right place. If he can tell you when a certain animal will be there... He has become your deer hunting guide.

Sometimes it is only logical to use good tips, stands, locations...
You can learn more about deer and greatly improve you chances.

Just be honest; share the credit for your success.
How much skill did you use; how much credit for that
big buck should you claim.
