Deer Hunting Blinds

Changes in deer hunting blinds are often in the materials and the ease of use. Not too long ago hunters made their own blinds out of wood or natural materials. Plastic is used in just about everything, and aluminum is good because it's not as heavy as the wood, or steel used before. The new hunting blind can be lighter, simpler, and quicker to use.

A natural ground blind can be built on the spot using natural cover; adding weeds, brush, limbs... Scrub-brush (pictured) may be enough to partially break-up the hunters form during the rifle season. Use a folding stool and something to trim the brush as needed.

Much less work, and almost as good: Dig a small hole next to a tree, drag brush in around the tree, sit flat on the ground, with feet and legs in the hole, and your back against the tree. You can use a cushion to sit on, and a box to reinforce the hole.

There are many ways to partially hide the human form using natural materials. Nature provides it so there is no expense. Such deer hunting blinds may look and smell more natural. Natural deer hunting blinds can be built and left in place for deer to grow accustomed to.

At "Score-Your-Hunting" we score ground deer blinds slightly higher than other kinds of deer blinds or deer stands. A hunter needs to know deer and the area to use any blind successfully. At the deer's eye level he is more likely to be spotted, especially if he makes a move at the wrong time.

Hunters today are more likely to buy something, than to make it.
A hunter may not be allowed to cut or rearrange nature when hunting on public or some private land.

This has lead to the development and improvement of various portable ground blinds. Often made for turkey hunters; they can work for deer; especially rifle hunters.

One style is a simple camo umbrella which has one flat side and can lay in front of, and hide the lower part of a hunter from one direction.

Another is like a little cloth fence which can be erected to hide three sides rather than just one. This one and the umbrella are usually used with the hunter leaning against a tree.

The advantages are: simple, quick, inexpensive, light weight, compact, and portable. A hunter may be able to wear camo, use some natural land features, add some natural materials, and hunt.

The disadvantages are: only partial concealment, siting on the ground, and they may not look natural to deer. Deer know their area, and are quick to spot anything new. A hunter may not want to leave the setup, and thus the deer won't have time to grow accustomed to it.

One way to really hide is in the tent blind. These are very much like small tents in both materials and the way they are set up. One difference is tents don't have openings made to shoot out of.

Some are fairly; light, portable, and quick to set up. They can hide the hunter well, and may offer some protection from the weather. Know that in some lighting conditions; shapes and movement can be seen through the fabric. The more opaque the material the better.

Tent blinds can also be bulky, heavy, and may be better suited to turkey hunting. Turkeys can see well, but don't seem as smart, and they may be more curious than whitetails.

Even young deer are careful around anything new. Even if it is well camouflaged with some native materials, when a tent blind literally "pops up", it will have their attention.

Older deer will be cautious for a longer time. A mature buck or doe will not come strolling by "anything" new to their home. They may not spot it at rifle range, but they probably won't come into bow range.

The box blind is often built from plywood, but some are plastic and metal today. It can be fairly simple, or almost like a comfortable little cabin. Its advantages can be protection from the weather, and more comfortable hunting.

The box blind disadvantages are construction time, and cost. It is a obvious intrusion on the landscape which older deer may avoid for some time. It is fairly permanent, but some can be moved with a tractor, trailer... The hunting skill when using one is in picking the location and placing the blind.

Deer hunting blinds and hides have been used successfully for many years. They require a hunter to understand deer, to know the area, to use the natural(or farmed) land to advantage,...

If someone does it all for you... if deer are lured with food or bait, it's not very authentic hunting.
