Deer Hunting Accessories;
Good, Bad, & Ugly

When it comes to deer hunting accessories I've slowly come to believe that "less is more". In my younger days I'd spend my money on the "cool" new accessories. Then I'd spend my time making sure everything was ready to take hunting.

After a morning hunt I often found myself leaving some deer hunting accessories in the truck for the afternoon. Over the years I've eliminated a lot of accessories and added very few.

Where, when, and how you hunt may be very different than me.
Some of these accessories may or may not be right for you.

I had a friend (now passed away) who started bow hunting about the same time I started. We had very different hunting styles. He'd excitedly show me every new gadget and gizmo and sometimes I'd try them. I think he enjoyed that as much as the hunting. I teased him, "You're not a deer hunter your a product tester."

I usually hunted on the ground and traveled comparably light. He teased me back, "You'll never get a deer the way you bow hunt." For several years I thought he could be right. We never actually hunted together, but we learned from each other.

Over the years I've used a lot of deer hunting accessories. I've simplified them to a few which I consider the best, most versatile, and most useful.

Click on the pictures below for more
information about that accessory.

iphone tool

The newest of my deer hunting accessories is my iPhone 4 This little device has a camera, video camera, wildlife calls, flashlight, road maps, compass, gps, note-book, voice recorder, calculator, dictionary, yellow pages, games, music, weather report, on and on...

Fenix LD01 Another of my recent deer hunting accessories is my tiny Fenix LD01 Flashlight. I tried several different headlights and flashlights over the years, but this is the one for me. It clips on my cap bill. The only real negative I've found is actually an advantage; it's so small it could be easily lost.

Slingshot Hunting
The best, most fun, bow hunting accessory has to be my slingshot. I was a gun nut who turned bow hunter. Now I'm even more surprised that I love using a slingshot. It's cheap, simple, and easy to carry. I don't need to carry or retrieve small game arrows now because of my slingshot. The bowhunter's handgun.

Deer Hunting Tips I sometimes "try" stalking, but more often still hunt, or hunt from a simple ground blind. I usually have a very short folding stool hanging from my shoulder when I go hunting. This one is good, but it could be better. My butt and back do get sore after sitting for hours. I know what I want, but haven't found anything like it. Maybe I'll build it someday.

Bowhunting Tips

For a bow hunter the quiver is among the most important of deer hunting accessories. Most use compound bows and hunt from tree stands, but mine is light weight and compact for an easy carry. My hunts are relatively short and with my slingshot for small game; three arrows is all I need.

Rifle Scopes

Near the top of deer hunting accessories for most gun hunters is a good scope. Many hunters don't appear to know much about optics and buy what is popular, or what's advertised as the best.

Best Hunting Binoculars Binoculars is an area of optics where hunters are "not getting their money's worth" in my opinion. Pictured are inexpensive specialty 4x21's which have limited uses. Many hunters appear to buy 10x or even 12x binoculars which also have limited uses. Between these extremes the 6x30,7x35,& 8x40; "balanced" binoculars are the most useful.

Good Wildlife Cameras While we're talking optics, there are some great little cameras with powerful lenses for wildlife photography. Certain features are essential on the small cameras for consistently sharp pictures. I was a professional for many years. But I don't need a bunch of equipment like pictured here today.

We use our hunting truck to get to and from our hunt. It could be considered among the most expensive of deer hunting accessories. I can remember when hunting cost very little, and I seldom noticed the price of gas. Hunting doesn't always cost a lot today, but we're bombarded with advertising selling expensive macho stuff for "real men" to use. Trucks, guns, bows...

Groud Blind I most often build a ground blind from natural materials to hunt from. I'm not an expert on tree stands or even commercial ground blinds, but I do have some knowledge and thoughts.

The Bad and Ugly!

Feeding takes the natural out of nature, the wild out of wildlife, and the hunt out of hunting. Feeding wildlife and especially hunting around feeders should be illegal everywhere in my opinion.

Feeder

Notice the ladder stand in the only tree in this field. This "hunter" is lazy or has no scouting or hunting skills. He would most likely only get a deer trained to come to the feeder.

The deer feeder's increased acceptance will help to bring an early end to hunting as we know it. A feeder has no legitimate part in authentic hunting. We live in a largely manipulated unnatural world today, but this is one manipulation we don't need.

This machine exist to make money. State wildlife agencies surly know that feeding is not good but some are giving in. This machine and other such feeding allow lazy unskilled people an easy way to view or kill animals. You can buy deer calls which make the sound of a feeder! :-(
