Curiosity

Curiosity can work for you, or not; depending on the situation.
If you have read: "First Turkey" , you know that the turkey's mistake was that she was curious. I had made a mistake, in my rush, and had thought I was hidden; I wasn't. That time, the mistake worked in my favor.

Curiosity often causes deer, turkey, or other animals to move for a better, or closer look. At least it may cause them to hang around for a few seconds. This is not the first time a deer came toward me, but it is the first time where I have photographs.

On my way to the farm I always take a road which goes by a wildlife refuge. I enjoy seeing wildlife, and keep my camera ready. Most of my wildlife pictures have been taken from a truck, boat, or canoe.

deer pictures The second picture is through the foliage. There is a great deal of foliage, and a rise of several feet to the field, which is higher than the road. The young deer could only see something moving, probably my head and shoulders; not my full form.

deer pictures I played with her, swayed from side to side a little. Then I crouched, moved down a few feet, and did it again. Finally moving about twenty feet away from the truck; where there was less foliage. She was now much closer, and looking for me.

deer pictures Although she was young, she was instinctively moving downwind, and I knew she would scent me in a few seconds. Read: Sense of Smell . I stood, and shot several frames quickly, before she decided to white-tail-it.
Understanding such animal behavior can help, but my own such behavior causes me to make mistakes.

My hunting style is often moving, stalking, still hunting, and somewhat spontaneous ground blinds. Read: Stalking, Still Hunts, or Blinds & Hides . When on the move, or sitting, my own curiosity, and impatience causes mistakes.

Moving, when hunting, should be slow, planned, and deliberate. I sometimes get too curious about what I'll see next. Thinking; when I get around that bush... I'll have a better view. I know I should try to look through the brush, looking for a shape, movement...

It takes a great deal of discipline not to move just to get a better view. The same is true of sounds; I still sometimes turn too quickly when I hear a curious sound.

Curiosity is a part of this deer hunting game. As we become more attuned to nature, we know there are wonderful, exciting, interesting things to see. We don't want to miss any of it.
