Bow Hunting Deer

recurved bow

Bow hunting deer has been growing in popularity. This could be the most positive thing to happen to the sport of deer hunting; ever! It scores highly at "score-your-hunting" because the skills required are greater than that of the gun hunter.

When Fred Bear became a bow-hunter in the 1930's it was not a popular sport.

Bear was instrumental in establishing a bow n arrow season in Michigan; one of
the first. He eventually started Bear Archery. He promoted archery, traveling the world, hunting almost everything,
even elephant, with his recurved bows.

When choosing a bow today some hunters continue to hunt with the traditional bow, sometimes called a stick bow. The stick bow can be a long bow or a recurved bow. The most popular bow today is neither, it's the compound bow. Some hunters are allowed to hunt with a crossbow.

No matter which kind of bow a hunter uses he is limited to a relatively short accurate range when shooting a bow. Limited range requires better hunting skills to get close. Read: Why We Hunt

shooting a bow

Some guns have a limited range as well. But! With the exception of
the crossbow, there is a great deal of movement required to draw and release an arrow. This movement alerts the deer and adds to the difficulty of using a bow; especially if you are hunting on the ground. Having good complete camo, or a bowhunter's ghillie suit can help.

Several different methods of bow hunting deer are used today.
A few hunters are so good they can actually stalk, or still hunt on the ground. Many bow-hunters use some kind of a ground blind, and even more use a tree-stand, or elevated platform of some kind.

No matter which way they hunt, the bow-hunter has to have enough skill to get very close to a deer. He must also have some knowledge of deer behavior, or he may never get to release an arrow.

Some hunters say,
"Any deer taken with a bow is a trophy."
