My best iPhone case is a compromise of protection, easy carry, and easy accessibility. Maybe some of what I've learned can help you find your best.
On a typical day I use my iPhone for many things. When hunting I use it less often, but to take a picture, call game, check the weather, make a note... See my page on
iPhone tricks for hunting.
The iPhone is well built using extremely hard, tough glass, and metal for most parts. Still a hard impact or water could put it out of business.
At first a "bumper" case gave my new iPhone 4 a little protection. When I found the Otter Box Defender Case I thought it would be be the best iPhone case and all I'd ever need for daily use, hunting, fishing...
There 'is' much to like about the Otter Box Defender Case. It offers layers of protection from an impact (except the screen) and some protection from dust or water splashes.
It has a belt clip which rotates for horizontal or vertical wear. The clip even allows the phone to be set up at an angle for viewing videos, pictures…

I would most likely still be happily using the Otter Box Defender if it were not so fragile. Yes! Fragile! I'm careful, easy on things, and seldom have any problems.
This case has broken in three different places! A friend's also broke. Otter Box quickly replaced the broken parts.
With the breakage problems I began to notice some other things which I didn't like about the Otter Box Defender.
It makes my iPhone somewhat bulky and heavier. The belt clip is a little cumbersome and it was the first thing which broke. The screen protection layer works, but its not as nice as touching the actual screen.
I thought I'd bought the best iPhone case. But I resumed my search while thinking about how I actually use the iPhone. I spent several hours researching cases, reading reviews... mostly at Amazon.com.
I decided on a flip-down-case from CaseCrown. It cost about $10 with shipping. The Otter was almost $50. There are several similar flip-down or flip-up cases available. This case is simple, thin, light... I carry it in my pocket.
The Otter Box Case offers better protection with the exception of the screen. With the Otter Defender the screen is slightly recessed, but only a thin transparent plastic dust barrier covers covers it.
The flip-down case covers the screen (when it's closed) and offers reasonably good protection. If a rock or something sticking up from the ground were to impact the screen in a fall, I believe the flip-case offers more protection.
An impact to the edge or corner and the Otter Defender has three layers of protection. My flip case does not cover some edges in order to allow access to controls...
The case edge however extends out from the phone edges not covered. I believe that case edge would absorb some shock protecting the phone from ordinary impacts.
The flip-down cover is not ideal or very natural to me. I still try to flip it up sometimes. It does get in the way.
Some reviews said the flip up was worse, and some liked them. Some case covers flip all the way over, but are said to block the camera lens...
I also have the Outdoor Products case for more extreme conditions. I got it at WalMart. I can leave the flip case on and it fits tightly in this waterproof case. The two case protection is great, but then phone accessibility is not.
I hope this information helps you find your best iPhone case. I always keep my eyes open for something even better.
